Jamie Markwick wins 2018 SEG Junior Championship

The 2018 South East Group Junior Championship was held at Moor Park Golf Club on Tuesday 29th May. As if the full length of the High Course was not enough of a challenge, the weather conspired to make the day rather tougher than most expected.

After a long weekend of stormy weather, the first round began at 8am. The weather was threatening all morning and a slow moving storm was being tracked in the clubhouse as it made its way towards Rickmansworth from the east. At 13.45 the players were called in from the course and play was suspended. The second round was underway but twelve young men had not quite completed their first round. Given the strength of the rain, the proximity of the storm and the forecast (which had been accurate all morning) the decision to reduce the championship to 18 holes only was made very soon after play was suspended. There followed a long wait until the remaining players went back out on to the course to complete their rounds and allow the competition to stand as valid.

The clubhouse leader when play was suspended was Jamie Markwoick (Corhampton GC.) He, of course had to wait at the golf club until the end of the day in case there was a need for a play off. There wasn’t and his patience was rewarded with the victory. Jamie’s round of 71 secured him the trophy by two strokes from Michael Gilbert (Chelmsford GC) and Dominic Clemons (Hanbury Manor GC) who both scored 73 and Harry Moncur (Abridge GC) who scored 74. Alfie Robinson (Pyecombe GC) won the Best U16 prize with a score of 75.
